What is Hypoid Bevel Gear?

Hypoid Bevel Gear is slight deviation from a bevel gear that originated as a special development for the automobile industry. This permitted the drive to the rear axle to be nonintersecting, and thus allowed the auto body to be lowered. It looks very much like the spiral bevel gear. However, it is complicated to design and is the most difficult to produce on a bevel gear generator.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Hypoid gear?

Advantages:
  • Hypoid gears are more efficient than spiral bevel gears, as they have less contact area between the teeth and generate less heat.
  • Hypoid gears are quiet so that can be used in applications where noise is a concern.
  • Hypoid gears are capable of handling high load capacities.
  • It provides a compact gearing body replacing several stages of reduction gears. This reduces the cost sharply. A pair of hypoid gears are able to produce an amazing reduction of speed of 60:1 in one stage.
Disadvantages:
  • Difficult to design
  • More difficult and expensive than spiral bevel gear to manufacture
  • Hypoid gears require more lubrication than spiral bevel gears
  • Not suited for high radial loads
