What is Power Skiving?
Power skiving is a continuous cutting process that can complete all processing steps in one clamping. It essentially combines the two processes of hobbing and gear shaping. This process takes much less time to produce a gear than other techniques and is typically four times faster than gear shaping. Gear shaping requires repeated stroke motion to process the gear teeth. This motion is a non-processing empty return stroke after cutting. Power scraping eliminates this unnecessary non-cutting time. Unlike the broaching process, power skiving requires only one machining setup, ensuring greater flexibility and quality. In contrast, the broaching process has a long tool processing cycle and low production flexibility, thus becoming a bottleneck.
Why is the power skiving process attracting so much attention today?
Power skiving was conceived as early as 1910, and since then, it has been recognized that skiving can be much more productive than shaping most internal gears. However, only after machining centers became more robust and rigid and synchronized spindles were created power skiving became more widely used.
What are the special requirements for power skiving?
Power skiving requires machining centers and spindles that can cope with highly dynamic machining conditions and fully synchronized spindles. If the part spindle slows down, the tool spindle can respond immediately.
In the power skiving process, the tool and gear axes are staggered. The angle between the tool and the gear axis determines the production efficiency. The larger the angle, the higher the production efficiency.
Suitable software is also essential for machine control, optimizing the efficiency of the skiving process.
What are the requirements for the tool system for power skiving?
Power skiving requires more productive tools. Indexable tools increase productivity and minimize the use of solid tools in finishing operations. This also means minimizing the frequency of regrinding of finishing tools.
What is the application of power skiving?
Power skiving is suitable for producing internal gears, shafts with internal/external teeth, splines, or individual gear parts with external and internal splines. It is also suitable for pre-hardening of internal gears and hard machining of all types of gears.
